About Lambeth
Lambeth is one of the districts in the Central London with Charring Cross located 1.6km to the Northwest of it. Waterloo tube station, Lambeth North tube station and Southwark tube station provide adequate connectivity with London Underground Network to Lambeth. Waterloo has a rail station too.
The earliest record of the word that refers to Lambeth date back to 1062 and the recorded word is Lambehitha. The exact word Lambeth was recorded more than a couple of centuries later in 1255. The word was the name of a dock where lambs were shipped to or from.
The word is formed by the amalgamation of lamb and hythe of Old English. The closest reference to the term South Lambeth that could be found is sutlamehethe, which was recorded in 1241. The name of Lower Marsh Street is derived from Lambeth Marshe, which was a marshland that was drained for the construction of the street. The locality around Lower Marsh Street and Waterloo railway station came to be known as Waterloo after the establishment of latter in the region.
Lambeth Palace is on the opposite of Palace of Westmister across River Thames. Lambeth used to be a marshland until first half of 18th century, after which the inauguration of Westminster, Blackfriars and Vauxhall Bridges in succession led to development of important thoroughfares such as Camberwell New Road, Kennington Road and Westminster Bridge Road. The progress of Lambeth towards urban development has been the result of those early constructions.
